Excerpt from the Ambassadors Arise Guide Book:
“Poor, overstimulated postmodern man – he is distracted in unfamiliar places. He is more likely to blaze through a new trail, head-down, looking for loose rocks and jutting roots, than to actually slow down and appreciate the journey along the way. It isn’t until he arrives at the intended point of interest that he realizes the trek wasn’t enjoyable. He was so distracted by his unfamiliarity with the trail that he spent his time looking for hazards. This is a common pitfall for us today, because we have been re-wired to prioritize efficiency and productivity over enjoyment and wonder.
Our society is so rushed and frenetic that we must relearn to engage with nature at its pace. In a car-driving, microwave-zapping, google-searching world, we have manipulated our environment and deviated far from mankind’s intended rhythm. We must now retrain ourselves to be patient and present – this requires true willpower for a people used to immediate results with minimal effort. Can you imagine Homer or Ovid throwing temper tantrums over a delayed meal? We cannot help but be affected by the busyness of this age, however, we can promote habits that help us reclaim what the convenience of technology has stolen from us. We should also endeavor to recover what modernity and postmodernity rejected, namely tradition and objective truth. When we look to indigenous cultures, we find thriving ecologies, They have largely rejected the pure pursuit of profit and demonstrate how we can slowly reclaim wild lands. Nature Journaling is just the tip of the iceberg for delving into the world of conservation and rehabilitation. Allow me to share how to do exactly that.”
We were made to live in harmony with nature. Thankfully, good nature stewardship is easy enough to begin — step outdoors and notice what is going on around you.
You don’t need any special qualifications to lead a Nature Journal Club. You simply need to have a desire to be in nature and share that passion with others. So, if like most people, you don’t have the scientific names of local plants memorized, don’t sweat — you will learn as you go. And, because you’re in charge of your learning, it can be as robust or simplistic as you like.
